Gachagua Clarifies Nairobi Pact With Kalonzo, Reveals Why Mohammed Ali Defected From DCP to Wiper

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has moved to clear the air over remarks he made about his Democracy for Citizens Party's (DCP) electoral strategy in Nairobi, while also shedding light on the political journey of Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a joint media interview with Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, which was aired on Lightcast TV Kenya, Gachagua clarified that while he had initially expressed ambitions of DCP dominating Nairobi's major seats, the arrangement is more nuanced and consultative than earlier statements may have suggested.

He acknowledged that DCP must field a candidate for the Nairobi governorship, but noted that for other positions, including the Senate, Woman Representative, and Members of Parliament, the party would consult with Kalonzo's Wiper and allied outfits to agree on the best strategy.

The former deputy president was equally candid on the matter of Nyali MP Mohammed Ali, popularly known as Jicho Pevu.

Gachagua had earlier, in February 2026, endorsed Ali as his party's flagbearer for the Mombasa gubernatorial race, but the picture has since shifted.

He explained that while Mohammed Ali was indeed in DCP, he and Kalonzo had agreed that Ali would run under Wiper in Mombasa, a move he described as part of a broader coalition strategy.

Notably, Gachagua referred to Kalonzo Musyoka as his "cousin," underscoring the close personal bond between the two leaders that has underpinned their political alliance.

The DCP leader elaborated that such arrangements would be replicated across urban centres and cities, with the goal of avoiding friendly fire within the opposition by sitting down and agreeing on who is the best fit for each contest and under which party they should run.

Kalonzo, for his part, has since confirmed during a rally at Kongowea in Mombasa that Mohammed Ali will indeed contest the Mombasa gubernatorial seat on a Wiper ticket in 2027, describing the legislator as a clean leader capable of transforming the county.

The joint interview underscored the deepening ties between Gachagua's DCP and Kalonzo's Wiper as the two opposition outfits work to consolidate their coalition ahead of the next general election.

The alliance, anchored on a united opposition front, has seen the two parties agree to coordinate their candidate fielding in Nairobi and other key battlegrounds, with DCP positioned as the dominant force in the capital.

The willingness of both leaders to share platforms and publicly back each other's preferred candidates signals a maturing partnership that could prove pivotal as Kenya's opposition continues to regroup and reorganise against the ruling establishment.
