Residents of Free Area in Nakuru County are mourning the shocking death of a young woman who was reportedly killed by her husband inside their home as their little daughter watched in fear.
According to neighbours, the woman, identified as Monica, was well known in the area for selling boiled eggs at the nearby shopping centre.
Her sudden death has left many in disbelief, describing her as a hardworking and friendly person who never quarreled with anyone.
A neighbour who discovered the body said she had gone to Monica’s house to top up her electricity token and deliver some papers related to her small business.
When she arrived, she noticed something strange.
“The door was locked from outside, which was unusual. When I got in, I found her young daughter alone. She said her mother was inside, but when I called out, there was no response. I walked into the bedroom and found Monica lying still,” the neighbour recalled tearfully.
The neighbour immediately rushed to call others for help. When they returned, they realized Monica had visible marks around her neck, suggesting that she might have been strangled. Police were later called to the scene, and the child was taken into safety.
Another woman who often helped Monica with laundry said she was returning from prayers when she heard the sad news.
“It was heartbreaking. I couldn’t believe what I saw,” she said.
The suspect, believed to be Monica’s husband, is said to have fled the area after the incident.
Police have launched a manhunt and are calling on anyone with information about his whereabouts to report to the nearest station.
Community leaders have urged couples to seek peaceful solutions to domestic disagreements rather than resorting to violence.
“A small child has been left without a mother, and it’s very painful. People must learn to talk through their problems,” said one elder.
On social media, Kenyans expressed anger and sadness, with many calling for justice for the young mother.
Others shared messages of comfort to the grieving family, describing Monica’s death as another reminder of the growing cases of domestic violence in Kenya.
Police investigations are still ongoing as Monica’s family prepares for her burial.
