A 27-year-old man from Laikipia, Wilson Wambugu, is serving an 80-year jail term after being convicted of a crime he insists he never committed. Wambugu, who is currently imprisoned in Nyeri, says his ordeal began after a fallout with a cousin of the family that had employed him as a shamba boy.
Speaking to Jamba TV, Wambugu revealed that his troubles started when he refused to buy alcohol for the cousin, explaining that his small salary could barely cover his mother’s medical expenses.
“I was earning KSh 6,000. I used KSh 5,000 to buy my mum’s medicine and kept KSh 1,000 for my needs. I couldn’t afford to buy alcohol, but I offered to buy him tea. He got angry and told me I’d face the music,” Wambugu recounted.
Later that evening, the cousin allegedly returned with police officers and accused him of sexually assaulting teenage girls. According to Wambugu, the victims themselves denied the accusations, insisting they did not know him personally. Despite their claims, he was arrested, charged, and sentenced to 80 years in prison.
“I did not do it. Even the victims said I didn’t. I am innocent,” he said emotionally. Wambugu believes the teenagers were coerced into making false statements, leading to his conviction.
Now facing the grim reality of spending the rest of his life behind bars, the young man says the sentence has broken him. “I’ll be released in 2076, when I’ll be 81 years old. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll even live that long,” he said.
He added that most of his family members are unaware of his imprisonment and that life in prison has been extremely difficult. “It’s tough here. Every day feels like a battle,” he shared.
Wambugu hopes that one day justice will prevail and his name will be cleared.
