Inside Ruto's UDA's Plan To Harshly Discipline Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga Over Recent Controversial Remarks On Raila’s Death

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced plans to take disciplinary action against Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga following his controversial remarks about the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Speaking on Thursday, UDA Chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire said the party had disassociated itself from Kahiga’s statements, terming them insensitive during a period of national mourning.

“As the UDA party, we disassociate ourselves from the sentiments made by Governor Kahiga and have cautioned him to uphold the values and ideals of the ruling party,” Mbarire stated. She added that the party would officially write to the governor outlining the next course of action.

Kahiga came under fire after telling mourners in Nyeri that Raila’s death was a “blessing” for the Mt Kenya region, claiming the former Prime Minister’s alliance with President William Ruto had sidelined their region in development priorities. His remarks drew sharp criticism from both UDA and ODM leaders, who accused him of insensitivity.

Following the backlash, the governor issued a public apology, resigning from his position as Vice Chair of the Council of Governors. In his apology, Kahiga said his comments had been misunderstood and expressed regret for causing distress.

“I sincerely apologise to the Odinga family, the ODM fraternity, and Kenyans at large. My remarks were not meant to celebrate the loss but to highlight concerns about development disparities,” Kahiga clarified.

Mbarire, however, dismissed Kahiga’s claims, insisting that the Mt Kenya region has greatly benefited from the current administration. She cited ongoing projects in housing, roads, electrification, and health, affirming that the region remains firmly behind President Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has already summoned Kahiga over the remarks as the political fallout continues to unfold.
