A fresh storm appears to be forming within President William Ruto’s political base amid growing speculation that he may not defend his seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an interview on TV47, Dr. Peter Mbae, the Secretary for Planning and Economic Affairs in the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), claimed that President Ruto’s political strength has greatly diminished both within UDA and across the Mount Kenya region.
According to Dr. Mbae, Ruto’s once-solid control over his party has been eroded by infighting, mistrust, and discontent among key allies.
“President Ruto is now a shadow of the political powerhouse he once was. He understands that UDA has lost its original purpose and will eventually walk away from it before 2027,” Dr. Mbae said during a press briefing in Nairobi on Thursday.
He further suggested that Ruto might explore new political partnerships, including a possible alliance with figures from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Mbae hinted that early signs of dialogue and a shift in tone between leaders from the two camps indicate potential cooperation.
Political observers argue that such a move could be part of a broader strategy to rebuild national support as Ruto’s influence in Central Kenya continues to wane.
“His support in the region is no longer guaranteed. To remain competitive, he may have to form new alliances, even with those he once opposed,” Mbae added.
The comments come at a time when internal wrangles continue to shake UDA, with some members accusing the party leadership of abandoning loyal supporters in favor of personal interests.
As the 2027 election draws closer, attention now turns to whether President Ruto will remain with UDA or chart a new political path in a bid to revive his once formidable influence on Kenya’s political stage.
