“I support all the opposition candidates, but a person with 5,000,000 votes cannot deputise 3,000,000 votes,” Methu says

John Methu has declared that in the ongoing opposition talks, a presidential contender commanding five million votes cannot reasonably agree to deputise another candidate with only three million votes.

The outspoken Nyandarua senator made the remarks on Sunday, May 17, 2026, while accompanying Rigathi Gachagua during his political tour of the United Kingdom.

His comments are likely to fuel fresh debate over how the united opposition will choose a single flag bearer to challenge William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking to supporters in London, Methu said the process of selecting the opposition’s presidential candidate should be guided by political strength and the number of votes each principal can bring to the coalition.
