Kenya’s opposition politics could be headed for a major realignment, with indications that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is considering launching his own political party and mounting a presidential bid ahead of 2027.
Political observers say such a move would significantly alter the power dynamics within the Linda Mwananchi movement and leave key allies facing difficult choices.
Sifuna may be weighing plans to unveil an independent political outfit. If he proceeds, the new party would position him as a presidential contender and potentially fracture existing opposition structures.
The development is expected to directly impact Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Siaya Governor James Orengo, both of whom have been central figures in opposition mobilization. Analysts argue that Babu and Orengo would be presented with two unappealing options.
The first would involve joining a Sifuna-led party and accepting his leadership. The second would risk political isolation, with no clear alternative platform capable of advancing their national ambitions.
Either scenario, commentators note, would complicate their political calculations far more than anticipated.
The potential shift carries a sharp irony. Leaders who have positioned themselves as architects of the opposition’s future could find themselves reacting to events rather than shaping them.
"The hunters will become the hunted," a political strategist familiar with the discussions said, noting that both Babu and Orengo may be forced to negotiate from a position of weakness rather than strength.
Whether Sifuna ultimately launches the party remains to be seen. However, if the plan materializes, it is likely to rewrite political ambitions within the opposition and compel Babu and Orengo to urgently redefine their paths.
The next few months are expected to be decisive as consultations continue and alliances are tested.
