A Painful True Story That Still Shocks Kenya: How a Married Mother of Three, Janet Wangui Waiyaki, Left Home Alive but Never Returned After a Morning Outing Ended in a Hail of Police Bullets at Nairobi's City Park, Leaving Behind Grieving Children

SAD EDUCATIVE TRUE STORY

Janet Wangui Waiyaki was 41 years old. A married businesswoman and mother of three, she was the second wife of Nairobi businessman George Kirubi. She carried the daily weight of family life while navigating tensions in her marriage.....WATCH THE VIDEO.

On the evening of 19 May 2018, her 26-year-old nephew Bernard Gathuma Chege picked her up from her home in Greenspan, Donholm. They spent the night together — chewing miraa, driving around, and sharing time that many would later call too intimate for an aunt and nephew.

The next morning, Sunday 20 May, they drove toward Limuru but turned back because of cloudy weather. Janet suggested they stop at City Park instead. They arrived around 9 a.m. and parked near the cemetery area.

Janet moved to the back seat. Bernard stayed in the driver’s seat and soon dozed off.WATCH THE VIDEO.
Around 10:30 a.m., two Administration Police officers on patrol — Constables William Kipkorir Chirchir and Godfrey Kipng’etich Kirui — approached the heavily tinted stationary vehicle.

They knocked on the windows. The occupants did not respond immediately. Suddenly, the car moved forward and sped off. The officers opened fire with their AK-47 rifles, pumping multiple rounds into the Toyota Fielder.

Bullets tore through the car. Janet was hit several times, including wounds to the back, chest and her head. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a ditch. WATCH THE VIDEO.
Bernard, badly wounded, later stopped the car and called for help. Janet lay dead in the back seat from the gunshot wounds. She was found completely naked, legs apart, in a position that fueled immediate talk of sexual activity.

Bernard was only in trousers. Postmortem confirmed she died from multiple high-velocity gunshot injuries.
Bernard denied any sexual relationship with his aunt. He insisted theirs was a normal aunt-nephew bond and that he had panicked when armed men knocked on the window. He said he only wanted to drive away from the situation.

George Kirubi, Janet’s husband, had long suspected his wife and nephew were involved in an intimate sexual affair.

He had complained bitterly to Janet’s mother, her sister, and Bernard’s mother. WATCH THE VIDEO.He warned them to stop the relationship and openly stated that if the two were lovers, they did not deserve to live — quoting the Bible that people who engage in such sin should not be alive.

After the shooting, Kirubi strongly denied any involvement in his wife’s death. He rejected claims that he hired and influenced the police to assassinate them, asking why he would kill the mother of his three young children.

The two officers said they were conducting anti-terror patrols and fired when the suspicious tinted car suddenly fled after they tried to check it.
Janet fought for her life but died at the scene from the barrage of bullets. Bernard survived his injuries after hospital treatment. WATCH THE VIDEO.Her body was taken away and she was later buried in Murang’a many asking uncomfortable questions about the relationship.
