As the 2027 election approaches, the sudden rise of Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna is increasingly seen as shifting the balance of power in Western Kenya politics.
Major political changes are unfolding in Western Kenya as Senator Sifuna emerges as a new voice sparking a new debate over who will become the leading voice of the Mulembe community in national politics.
Sifuna has defiantly challenger the region's long-standing political establishment and shaking long-established political figures in Western Kenya, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula.
Sifuna's popularity has grown not only in Western Kenya but also nationally, particularly among Generation Z voters, with his popular slogan, “Mimi ndiye Sifuna” (“I am Sifuna”), resonating well with many people.
Opposition leaders and veteran politicians from western region have described Sifuna as an emerging new leader in the region and criticized Mudavadi and Wetang'ula for what they claimed was a failure to address long-standing challenges facing Western Kenya residents.
“What matters is not age or how long someone has been in politics, but the type of leadership they provide,” Osotsi said.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale also believes the future of the Mulembe (Luhya) community is in Sifuna's hands.
“The Luhya people are no longer naive. We need leaders who will bring us development and political influence,” Khalwale said at a meeting in Bungoma.
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya said leaders in Western Kenya who support the government have been asking citizens to wait until 2032, while needed development has yet to materialize.
“If Sifuna is the one who will unite the Luhya people, we will stand behind him,” Natembeya said.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has already indicated his willingness to work with Sifuna in efforts to unseat President Ruto in the 2027 election.
Nevertheless, Sifuna has not announced whether he will run for president in 2027 or seek re-election as Nairobi senator, some leaders already view him as a fresh political face capable of reshaping the region's direction.
