According to accounts from her family and classmates, Cecilia showed extraordinary courage when the fire broke out in the school dormitory.

Instead of immediately fleeing for her own safety, she is said to have helped several students escape from the burning building before attempting to save herself.

After ensuring that others had reached safety, Cecilia reportedly jumped from the upper floor of the building as flames and smoke spread rapidly through the dormitory. In the process, she sustained a serious leg injury.

She was rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention, but despite efforts by doctors to save her life, she later succumbed to her injuries. Her death has added to the national grief following the Utumishi Girls fire tragedy.

Her mother, Elizabeth Wanjiru, recounted the painful moment she realized something was wrong after arriving at the school. She said panic set in when she could not immediately locate her daughter, prompting a desperate search for information.

According to her, classmates later revealed that Cecilia had helped rescue other students before being injured in her attempt to escape.
