Cecilia Wanjiku, a Form Three student at Utumishi Girls Academy, is being celebrated as a hero after losing her life while trying to rescue fellow students during the tragic dormitory fire that broke out on May 28. SEE PHOTOS.
According to reports from survivors, the fire started at the Meline Waithera Dormitory in the middle of the night, quickly spreading through the two-storey building and trapping students inside.
However, witnesses say Cecilia made a different and courageous decision. Instead of focusing only on her own escape, she reportedly responded to cries for help from students who were still trapped in the upper sections of the dormitory.
Survivors recall that Cecilia acted quickly, grabbing a blanket, soaking it with water, and attempting to use it as protection against the smoke and flames as she moved toward danger. Her goal, according to classmates, was to reach students who could not get out on their own.Students who witnessed the incident described her as calm and focused despite the chaos surrounding her. She is said to have encouraged younger learners to stay low and guided them through smoke-filled passages while helping others out of their beds and directing them toward safety. WATCH VIDEO.
Even as the fire intensified, Cecilia reportedly continued moving deeper into the dormitory in an effort to rescue more students.
