Kenya’s political landscape could be headed for a dramatic shift as the nation awaits a landmark court decision on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment challenge.
Ahead of the highly anticipated ruling scheduled for Monday, June 8, 2026, Consumer Federation of Kenya Secretary General Stephen Mutoro, has shared his assessment of the possible legal and political impact that could follow the court’s verdict.
In a detailed statement posted on X, Mutoro argued that the High Court may nullify the impeachment if judges conclude that constitutional procedures and legal requirements were not properly followed during Gachagua’s removal from office.
Mutoro noted that a favorable judgment could reopen discussions surrounding benefits and financial entitlements that were lost after Gachagua left office.
These include salary-related payments, allowances, retirement benefits and other privileges attached to the office of deputy president.
Beyond the legal implications, Mutoro believes the ruling could significantly influence the 2027 political contest.
Should the impeachment be overturned, Gachagua would regain full eligibility to seek elective office, potentially setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle with President William Ruto.
However, Mutoro considers any return to the deputy presidency unlikely. He cited the strained relationship between Gachagua and Ruto, Gachagua’s own presidential ambitions, and the fact that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is already firmly settled in the position.
He further suggested that such a ruling could energize the DCP movement while reshaping opposition alliances, potentially creating fresh rivalry with wiper patriotic front leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, as preparations for the 2027 General Election gather momentum.
