A newly released online opinion poll has sparked discussion about the opposition's prospects ahead of the 2027 General Election, revealing the candidates currently enjoying the strongest support among respondents from the Mt Kenya region.
The survey, which attracted the participation of 1,804 individuals, was shared by political commentator Pauline Njoroge and sought to gauge public opinion on possible opposition leadership combinations.
According to the results, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i emerged as the most preferred presidential candidate among the options presented to voters.
The poll further indicated that a ticket pairing Matiang'i with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna received the highest level of support from respondents.
Matiang'i, who currently serves as Deputy Party Leader of the Jubilee Party, has remained a key figure in opposition politics.
Meanwhile, Sifuna has continued to strengthen his national profile through his role as Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement and his representation of Nairobi County in the Senate.
The survey also showed that Kalonzo Musyoka was the leading choice for the position of Prime Cabinet Secretary among the names included in the poll, highlighting his continued influence within opposition circles.
However, not all proposed leadership combinations received the same reception.
A lineup featuring Matiang'i as President, Sifuna as Deputy President, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as Prime Cabinet Secretary attracted the least support from participants, reflecting varying opinions on how the opposition should structure its leadership.
Despite the findings, political observers note that public opinion can change significantly before the 2027 General Election. With coalition negotiations still ongoing and political alliances yet to be finalized, the race for opposition leadership remains wide open.
