‘You’re already late, remain in Ruto govt’ – Natembeya warns western leaders yet to join opposition

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has warned leaders from the Western Kenya region who are still working with the government against attempting to join the opposition at the last minute ahead of the 2027 General Election.WATCH VIDEO HERE.

Speaking in Trans Nzoia County on Thursday, May 21, the outspoken governor said leaders who have remained silent while Kenyans continue facing economic hardships should stay in government instead of pretending to support wananchi when elections approach.

Natembeya urged residents to reject politicians who only defect to the opposition when political temperatures rise near election periods.

According to him, genuine leaders should stand with citizens during difficult times instead of enjoying government privileges while ordinary Kenyans suffer.

“Mtu akusaidie wakati wa shida ndiyo rafiki wa kweli,” the governor told residents as he criticised leaders waiting for the right political moment before changing sides.

The governor insisted that leaders who are not currently supporting the opposition should not expect sympathy from voters later.

At the same time, former nominated senator Gloria Orwoba issued a similar warning while attending the burial of Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka’s mother in Kisii County.

Orwoba urged leaders from the Kisii community to declare their political stand early and rally behind former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, who has recently gained strong political backing in the region.

She warned politicians against attempting to join Matiang’i’s camp late after failing to support him from the beginning.

According to Orwoba, leaders who continue supporting the government should prepare to face voters without expecting acceptance from the opposition later.

In the Mt Kenya region, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also been calling on politicians to join his political camp early, warning that the “door will soon close” for late defectors.

The latest statements highlight the growing political tension and shifting alliances being witnessed across the country as leaders prepare for the next General Election.

Political analysts now predict that several politicians may leave government ranks after the national budget process expected in June.

According to analysts, many Members of Parliament are currently avoiding political risks as they focus on securing development allocations for their constituencies before openly declaring their political positions.

Matungulu MP Stephen Mule recently argued that the real political changes would begin after August when politicians become less worried about party discipline and possible by-elections.

He stated that many MPs would eventually start making independent political decisions as the election season draws closer.WATCH VIDEO HERE.

The growing calls for early political loyalty now reflect increasing competition between government supporters and opposition leaders seeking to strengthen their influence ahead of the 2027 polls.
