Preliminary findings indicate that Wangari first met the doctor in 2015 through her personal gynaecologist. Investigators say the relationship initially began on a professional footing before gradually developing into a closer personal association after the death of her husband.
According to police reports, Dr Obwaka, aged 83, became unwell and was later pronounced dead on arrival at Nairobi Hospital after visiting Wangari in Kitengela on May 1, 2026.
Hospital officials indicated that the elderly doctor was rushed to the facility around 7 p.m. by Wangari, who had accompanied him during the visit.
His death was subsequently reported to police at Kilimani Police Station, prompting the initiation of formal investigations.
Detectives have since taken Wangari into custody to assist with inquiries as authorities work to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the doctor’s collapse and death.
In her statement to investigators, Wangari said Dr Obwaka contacted her earlier that day while he was en route to her residence in Kitengela.
She further stated that she prepared a meal consisting of rice and meat, which they reportedly shared upon his arrival.
She told detectives that shortly after eating, the doctor requested water but soon began feeling drowsy and developed breathing difficulties after taking a few sips.
Concerned, she reportedly sought help from a neighbour, who found the doctor unresponsive.
The neighbour assisted in arranging transport to hospital, but despite efforts to save him, Dr Obwaka was declared dead upon arrival.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police have collected food samples from the residence for forensic analysis to determine whether any substances may have contributed to his sudden illness.
A postmortem examination has also been scheduled to establish the precise cause of death.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing and that all possibilities remain open as detectives piece together the final moments of the respected medical professional’s life.
