Prepare for Heavy Rainfall: Kenya Met Issues a Yellow Warning to Residents in These Regions

Kenyans in several parts of the country have been urged to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible storms after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a fresh weather alert on Tuesday, May 26.

According to the department, intense rainfall is expected in regions including Nairobi, Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, Western Kenya, Nyanza, and parts of the Coast.

The agency warned that the downpour could trigger flooding in low-lying areas, poor visibility on roads, and disruptions to transport and business activities.

The warning comes just weeks after devastating floods affected thousands of families in different counties, leaving behind damaged roads, destroyed homes, and displaced residents.

Authorities now fear that continued heavy rains could worsen conditions in areas that are still recovering.

In Nairobi, dark clouds and intermittent showers were already being experienced by Tuesday afternoon, with many residents expressing concern over blocked drainage systems and rising water levels in some estates.

Motorists were advised to drive carefully, especially during evening hours when visibility is expected to reduce.

The Meteorological Department also cautioned people living near rivers and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant.

Fishermen and those using small boats along Lake Victoria and coastal regions were advised to avoid venturing into deep waters during stormy conditions.

County disaster response teams have reportedly been placed on standby in some affected areas as the government monitors the situation closely.

Kenyans on social media reacted to the alert with mixed feelings, with some calling for urgent action from county governments to unclog drainage systems before the rains intensify.

The weather department has encouraged the public to follow official forecasts and emergency advisories as the situation develops over the coming days.
