Top leaders from the Mulembe community, have urged Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang'ula, to contest for the deputy president position currently held by Kithure Kindiki.
The leaders from Western Kenya, who were more than 30 elected leaders met on Sunday at a hotel in Naivasha, urged President William Ruto to pick either Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi or National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula as his running mate in the 2027 General Election.
Sources indicated that during the meeting, the leaders proposed either Mr. Mudavadi or Speaker Wetang’ula as President Ruto’s preferred running mate.
“We also want the running mate position because we have a large voting population and leaders capable of holding that office,” said Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera.
The announcement places President Ruto in an even more difficult political position, with the seat currently occupied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki emerging as one of the most hotly contested positions.
However, political analysts see the move as a strategy to edge out Edwin Sifuna and George Natembeya, whose popularity appears to be rising rapidly in Western Kenya.
The Naivasha declaration is now increasing pressure on the President as he faces the difficult task of choosing his running mate.
Other leaders said to be interested in Prof. Kindiki’s position include Gladys Wanga, Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, and Anne Waiguru.
