A viral Facebook opinion poll has sparked fresh debate over who could lead Kenya’s opposition against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
The informal poll asked participants to choose their preferred opposition candidate from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and Martha Karua.
Though not scientifically conducted, the survey attracted thousands of reactions and triggered heated discussions across social media.
Fred Matiang’i appeared to gain strong support from many users, with supporters praising his firm leadership style, discipline, and record in government. Some argued he could become a serious challenger if opposition parties unite behind him.
Kalonzo Musyoka also maintained notable backing due to his long experience in opposition politics and coalition-building. Supporters described him as a steady and unifying figure.
Rigathi Gachagua generated mixed reactions. His supporters highlighted his influence in the Mount Kenya region and strong grassroots mobilization skills despite his impeachment and fallout with the Kenya Kwanza administration. Critics, however, questioned whether he can attract nationwide support.
Martha Karua received praise for her commitment to governance reforms, constitutionalism, and accountability, although some respondents doubted her national electoral strength.
Political analysts say the poll reflects an opposition that remains active but divided, with no clear consensus candidate emerging so far.
Observers also noted that social media is becoming increasingly influential in shaping political narratives and testing public opinion ahead of the 2027 elections.
