Fuel Crisis Exposes DP Kindiki’s Role, As CSs and Itumbi Lead Crisis Response In Ruto’s Absence

Kenya’s ongoing fuel crisis has triggered fresh political debate after questions emerged over the role and visibility of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki during a period of rising pressure on the government to stabilise supply and calm public concern.

According to reports cited in local media coverage, the crisis saw long queues at fuel stations across several towns, with motorists struggling to access petrol and diesel as uncertainty spread among consumers and transport operators. 

The situation quickly escalated into a national talking point, forcing government officials to step in with urgent communication and coordination efforts.

While President William Ruto was away on an official diplomatic tour in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, attention shifted back home to how the government structure was responding to the unfolding situation. 

Cabinet Secretaries were reportedly involved in emergency meetings aimed at addressing supply concerns and reassuring the public that stabilisation measures were underway.

At the same time, State House communication and digital coordination teams, including government digital strategist Dennis Itumbi, were visible in public messaging and online engagement, helping shape the administration’s response narrative during the crisis.

However, it was the perceived absence of the Deputy President from central crisis management that sparked political debate. 

Critics argued that Kindiki appeared less visible at the national level during a moment that required strong leadership coordination, instead focusing on development-related engagements in Tharaka Nithi County.

Political observers noted that while county development visits are part of his official duties, the timing of such engagements during a national emergency raised questions about prioritisation and internal coordination within the executive arm of government.

The report has since fuelled broader speculation regarding the Deputy President’s influence in day-to-day government operations, especially in situations requiring rapid national response. 

Some analysts suggest that the situation reflects the complex nature of power distribution within the Kenya Kwanza administration, while others argue that it is too early to draw conclusions about leadership dynamics based on a single crisis event.

Supporters of the Deputy President, however, maintain that his role is primarily supportive and that crisis management at the national level is coordinated through multiple government agencies and Cabinet Secretaries. 

They argue that visibility should not be confused with effectiveness, especially in a system where responsibilities are shared across different offices.

Meanwhile, government officials have continued to reassure the public that measures are being taken to stabilise fuel supply chains. 

Efforts are reportedly focused on logistics coordination, import scheduling, and addressing distribution bottlenecks that contributed to the shortages.

The crisis has also highlighted the growing importance of communication strategy in modern governance, with digital platforms playing a major role in shaping public perception. 

The prominence of State House-linked communication teams during the incident has further underscored how information management has become central to political crisis response.

Despite ongoing efforts to normalise the situation, the political conversation around leadership visibility and responsibility continues to intensify. 

Opposition voices and commentators have used the opportunity to question the cohesion and responsiveness of top government leadership during moments of national pressure.
