Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has accused former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju of staging his own disappearance, claiming the act was aimed at garnering public sympathy.
The remarks follow forensic findings indicating that Tuju never left his Karen residence during the period he was reported missing.
Speaking after Tuju resurfaced, Murkomen said investigators had established that the former CS remained at home while his family initially reported him MISSING
“We have information that he was in his residence, sleeping,” Murkomen stated, adding that preliminary investigations traced Tuju’s last known location to a bedroom in the Karen home.
Murkomen, who was travelling from London when informed of the disappearance, alleged that Tuju had deliberately switched off his phone.
He also claimed that Tuju’s family initially denied officers access to the residence, delaying verification efforts by police.
Following instructions from the Inspector General, officers were finally allowed into the home, after which Tuju allegedly contacted the media to announce his return, saying he had been hiding.
“These theatrics must come to a stop,” Murkomen said, urging the Judiciary to take a firm stance against what he described as a growing trend of faked abductions in the country.
The Interior CS’s remarks come hours after DCI Director Amin Mohamed confirmed that forensic analysis contradicted Tuju’s account, concluding that the former CS had remained inside his home throughout the alleged disappearance.
Authorities are yet to indicate if any legal action will be taken against Tuju or his family following the findings.
The incident has sparked public debate over the credibility of high-profile disappearance claims and raised questions about accountability among public figures in Kenya.
