Saboti MP Caleb Amisi now claims that Oburu Oginga's takeover of the ODM party less than 24 hours after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's death had a secret motive.
Oburu was named the new ODM Party Leader just hours after Raila, who had been the party boss since it's inception, died while undergoing treatment in India in October 2025.
Amisi claims that the move was unconstitutional, because according to the ODM laws, a party leader is not appointed but elected by the National Delegates Conference.
He now suspects that Oburu was placed there by people harbouring secret intentions, hence the decision to quickly fill the space, claiming that he should not be considered the party leader.
"ODM is structured. What was the vacuum? Would somebody come and install himself to be a party leader? No. Why? Because we have Article 6-2-2," he said on Saturday.
"That said, a special national delegate’s conference shall be called in the event of the death of the party leader to elect, not nominate, a new party leader," he is quoted by the People Daily.
According to Amisi, there was no need for hurry in replacing Raila, because according to the party's laws, the position was supposed to be assumed by one of the party's 3 Deputy Leaders until a new party boss is named.
He said that therefore, Oburu is not even in a position to sign nomination certificates, and those holding certificates signed by the Siaya Senator should consider them null and void.
