Trouble in Paradise? What Orengo Did as Oburu Odinga Held a Grand Event in Nyanza

Political tensions in Nyanza were on display as Senator Oburu Oginga hosted a grand Widows Empowerment Programme at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, attracting hundreds of beneficiaries but without Siaya Governor James Orengo.

The initiative, led by Interior PS Raymond Omollo alongside local leaders, supported 157 widow groups with food supplies, seedlings, and financial aid, raising over KSh 11 million to strengthen livelihoods.

Orengo’s absence, however, did not go unnoticed. The governor has been low-profile in recent months, prompting speculation among residents and civil society groups about his engagement in county affairs.

His skipping a high-profile ODM event often attended by party heavyweights has sparked debate over potential internal rifts.

Critics argue that bypassing major regional functions could hint at deeper political disagreements with leaders like Oburu Odinga, especially regarding policy directions and government cooperation.

County officials maintain that Orengo’s absence was due to private and official commitments, but the optics have fueled discussion on ODM’s future in the region.

While the empowerment program drew praise for its grassroots impact, political watchers are now focused on unity, leadership, and the party’s trajectory in Siaya.
