Huge Blow to Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP as Massive Crowd Troops to UDA Event in Nyeri Ahead of 2027 Race

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political ambitions suffered a significant setback after a massive crowd turned up for a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) grassroots sensitization event in Nyeri County—overshadowing his newly formed Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) just months after its launch.

The event, held at Kagumo Teachers Training College, brought together UDA elected leaders from across the county, alongside officials from the party’s national secretariat, in what appears to be a strategic show of unity and strength ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The huge turnout was interpreted by many analysts and supporters as a strong signal that UDA continues to enjoy firm control in Gachagua’s home turf, despite his recent attempts to carve out a fresh political identity through the DCP.

Observers noted that the enthusiastic crowd, which filled the venue and spilled into surrounding open spaces, represented a clear endorsement of UDA’s ongoing grassroots mobilization strategy.

During the event, UDA leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening party structures at the ward and polling-station levels.

They rallied supporters to participate actively in the upcoming grassroots elections, describing them as a crucial step toward preparing the party for national victory in 2027.

Their messaging was deliberate, highlighting unity, continuity, and loyalty to President William Ruto’s political vision.

For Gachagua, the optics could not have been worse.

As a former influential UDA figure who has since become one of its most vocal critics, he has been banking heavily on the DCP’s ability to penetrate the Mt. Kenya region.

However, Sunday’s overwhelming show of support for UDA suggests that the political terrain remains steeply uphill.

Political commentators argue that unless Gachagua rapidly consolidates his base and accelerates DCP’s grassroots operations, the party risks losing momentum before it even fully takes off.

Meanwhile, UDA’s aggressive county-by-county mobilization strategy seems poised to tighten the party’s grip on Nyeri and the wider Mt. Kenya region.

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the contrast between UDA’s vibrant activities and the DCP’s sluggish start could shape the region’s political narrative for months to come.
