Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai has sparked controversy after accusing senior ODM leaders of trying to weaken the party under the leadership of Siaya senator Oburu Oginga.
Alai’s remarks have divided Kenyans, with some calling out his alleged hypocrisy while others have suggested he formally join President William Ruto’s UDA party.
Alai claimed that ODM’s Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and his allies are using Oburu Oginga to dismantle the party from within.
Oburu assumed leadership of ODM following the sudden death of party leader Raila Odinga, who passed away while receiving treatment in India.
“Oburu Oginga is being used by Sifuna and his team to destroy ODM. By 2027, they will leave ODM a shell,” Alai said.
His comments came amid ongoing debates about the party’s direction following Raila’s death.
Some ODM members want the party to remain strong and field its own candidates in future elections, while others have pushed for alignment with a broader coalition that Raila had started building.
Alai’s statements drew immediate backlash. Many ODM supporters recalled that he had previously endorsed Oburu’s appointment as acting party leader.
Critics accused him of double standards and questioned his loyalty to the party. Some urged Alai to resign from ODM or formally join UDA, pointing to his previous public support for Ruto’s party.
Kenyans reacted strongly on social media. Awidhi Evance Odhiambo wrote, “If you feel that the house is shaken, quit! The exit is on the left. Let’s see Alai leave.”
Patrick Lumumba Okamo added, “The guy is warming towards UDA.” Others reminded Alai that he had supported Oburu’s leadership and should not undermine him now.
In a separate discussion, Alai highlighted his academic achievements, describing himself as one of Kenya’s top mathematicians.
He studied computer science at USIU and is pursuing a master’s degree in data analytics.
However, he emphasized that his current role as an MCA is to legislate and provide oversight, not to tutor students in mathematics.
