Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has hit back at President William Ruto after the head of state claimed that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was his only worthy competitor.
Speaking at an ODM delegates’ meeting in Mombasa on November 1, Sifuna said Kenyans will be surprised in the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna emphasized that ODM is preparing to field a strong presidential candidate and rejected any suggestion that no other contender could challenge the ruling party.
Najua hakuna jambo inaweza wekwa mbele yetu itushinde. Tukiamua tunasimamisha party leader wetu, tutashinda uchaguzi… Watashangaa sana,” Sifuna said, quoting Raila and stressing the party’s readiness.
He also clarified that the ongoing broad-based arrangement between ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) does not amount to a coalition.

Each party retains its independent identity and will make decisions collectively regarding the 2027 elections.
Sifuna warned ODM members not to use the upcoming November 27 by-election campaigns to push slogans about two-term presidencies.

He warned that the suppression of democratic voices, even in neighboring countries, could set a dangerous precedent.
