Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has sparked public debate after suggesting that certain political figures may be silently celebrating the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking during a memorial event in Bondo on Thursday, Mwangangi said Raila’s passing has exposed the hypocrisy of some leaders who once claimed to stand by him but have since gone silent.
“Some people who called Raila their mentor and friend are nowhere to be seen. It’s as if they are celebrating quietly. But we know who truly stood with him and who didn’t,” Mwangangi said, drawing mixed reactions from the crowd.
The Deputy Governor, a close ally of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, emphasized that Raila’s political legacy should unite rather than divide Kenyans. He urged leaders to emulate the late opposition chief’s courage and dedication to democracy.
His remarks came just hours after Kalonzo visited Raila’s Opoda home in Siaya County to console the Odinga family. The visit, which brought together key Azimio leaders including James Orengo and Wavinya Ndeti, was marked by emotional tributes and renewed calls for unity within the opposition coalition.
Mwangangi’s comments have stirred a heated conversation online, with some Kenyans accusing him of politicizing Raila’s death, while others supported his stance, saying it was time to expose those who benefited from the ODM leader’s political struggles only to abandon his ideals.
The remarks also come amid growing uncertainty about the future of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, as attention turns to who will inherit Raila’s political mantle. Mwangangi maintained that Raila’s vision for justice and equality must continue, regardless of personal ambitions or hidden rivalries within the coalition.
