A new political storm is brewing following the airing of comments by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on K24 TV, in which he says, “Ile heshima kubwa tunaweza kumpatia Raila Odinga ni kuhakikisha hakuna mtu atasema he will look after ODM.”
Loosely translated, this statement means the greatest honor that can be given to Raila Odinga is ensuring no one claims they will “take care” of ODM after him.
The remarks have since gone viral and stirred heated reactions online, reopening old political wounds. Among those who commented on the issue was Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, who did not spare Kalonzo.
In his social media post, Alai accused Kalonzo of being hypocritical and questioned his contribution to Kenya's political history, especially during the 2007 elections.
“You sabotaged Raila’s presidency in 2007. You didn’t do anything unique, revolutionary to support him. Wacha ukora,” Alai fired back, his words cutting through social media with the bluntness that has become his trademark.
Many Kenyans have interpreted Alai's comments as a reminder of the uneasy alliance between Raila and Kalonzo over the years—an alliance marked by loyalty in public but suspicion behind the scenes.
Odinga's supporters have thrown their weight behind Alai's sentiments, applauding him for uttering what they call "the truth few dare to say."
Others, however, have come in defense of Kalonzo, arguing that he has stood by Raila in difficult times and deserves respect for his long political career.
With emotions still running high, the debate has put into perspective a delicate balance within Kenya's opposition politics and the enduring weight of one name in shaping the nation's political destiny: Raila Odinga.
