Four police officers in Nakuru County have been arrested after their colleague was shot dead during a night patrol.
The officers, all from Maai Mahiu Police Station, were accused of being involved in the death and later trying to cover up what happened.
According to reports, the late officer, Corporal Hassan Lolkidid, went out on a patrol with his teammates in the Msikiti area.
The team had received information about a suspicious lorry offloading goods near the police station.
When they reached the scene, they found several men unloading hardware materials and tyres. The men ran away after spotting the officers.
Soon after, gunshots were heard, and Corporal Lolkidid was found lying on the ground with serious gunshot wounds. He was confirmed dead at the scene.
His body was later taken to Umme Funeral Home, where a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) immediately launched investigations into the matter.
Preliminary findings showed that some officers in the patrol team gave false information about the shooting. This raised suspicion that there was an attempt to hide the truth.
As a result, the four officers — Jim Murithi, Emmanuel Sang, Antony Wangombe, and Joshua Keter — were arrested and taken to Naivasha Police Station.
The police also took five firearms, including Ceska and Jericho pistols, for ballistic testing.
The tests will help find out which gun fired the bullet that killed the officer.
The lorry that was being offloaded was taken to Maai Mahiu Police Station as part of the ongoing investigation.
A senior police officer in Nakuru said that the law must be followed, even when officers are the suspects.
“We must protect the image of the police service. Any officer found guilty of wrongdoing will face the law,” he said.
The case is expected to be mentioned in court as detectives continue gathering more evidence.
The death of Corporal Lolkidid has left his family and colleagues in deep pain, with many calling for justice and better discipline among police officers.
The investigation continues as the public waits for answers about what really happened that night.
