Sad Twist As Kakamega Man Is Jailed For Sending Neighbour's Daughter To Buy Eggs From The Shops

Basil Okaroni, a 58-year-old farmer from Mumias in Kakamega County, says he spent 20 years in prison for a crime he insists he did not commit.

Basil said he grew up in Kakamega and completed his primary education in 1988. In 1993, he moved to Nakuru, where he worked as a bread supplier for several years before returning home around 2000. 

Back in Kakamega, he bought land, started a family, and earned a living through farming and small business.

According to Basil, his troubles began when a close neighbour asked him and his wife to look after his children while he travelled to visit his sick mother. The two families trusted each other, so they agreed to help.

The following day, Basil checked on the children and asked if they had eaten. They told him they had only taken tea in the morning and had nothing to cook for lunch. 

Basil searched his pocket and found KSh 200. He gave the money to one of the girls and asked her to buy two eggs, prepare food for the children, and return with the balance while he continued working on his farm.

However, Basil says the same KSh 200 was later presented in court as evidence in a case accusing him of sexually assaulting the girl. Prosecutors reportedly claimed the money was given to the child after the alleged offence, not for buying eggs.
