Olkalou By-Election Takes Dramatic Turn After Ruto's CS Targets Gachagua

The Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election has taken on greater political significance after a Cabinet Secretary in President William Ruto's administration criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during campaign activities, adding to the heated exchanges surrounding the contest.

Speaking at a campaign rally, the Cabinet Secretary accused Gachagua of making statements that could heighten political tensions ahead of the by-election.

The CS urged residents to reject divisive politics and instead support peaceful campaigns focused on development and service delivery.

In response, Gachagua defended his political position, maintaining that he has the right to campaign for his preferred candidate and express his views on national issues.

He also called for a level playing field, urging state institutions to remain impartial throughout the electoral process.

The exchange has intensified political debate in Ol Kalou, where major parties have deployed senior leaders to campaign for their candidates.

The constituency has become a focal point for both government and opposition figures seeking to demonstrate their political strength ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Political analysts say by-elections often attract heightened attention because they provide parties with an opportunity to test their support and campaign strategies.

They note that public exchanges between senior leaders are common during closely contested races but caution that campaigns should remain peaceful and issue-driven.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has continued to urge all candidates and political parties to comply with the electoral code of conduct.

Security agencies have also assured residents that measures are in place to maintain peace before, during, and after the vote.

As campaigning enters its final stages, observers expect more political engagements and public rallies across the constituency.

They emphasize that while campaign rhetoric may intensify, the outcome of the by-election will ultimately depend on the decisions made by Ol Kalou voters when they cast their ballots.
