Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over what he describes as attempts to make the Democracy for the Citizens (DCP) party the dominant political vehicle in the Mt Kenya region.
In a statement shared on social media, Ngunjiri accused Gachagua and his allies of dismissing other political parties by portraying them as affiliates of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
He argued that Mt Kenya voters should not be made to believe that DCP is the only political platform capable of representing their interests.
The former lawmaker accompanied his remarks with a campaign poster of Embu gubernatorial aspirant Lenny Kivuti, saying no individual or political group has the exclusive mandate to determine the political future of the region.
His remarks also highlight growing differences within the opposition, particularly between Gachagua's allies and leaders associated with the Jubilee Party.
While opposition leaders continue consultations aimed at forming a united front for the next election, differing opinions have emerged over party leadership and the choice of a presidential candidate.
Political analysts believe the competition for influence in Mt Kenya will play a crucial role in shaping the opposition's strategy, given the region's significant voting bloc and its influence on national elections.
They also note that the rivalry among opposition parties could affect campaigns for parliamentary, gubernatorial and other elective positions as political realignments continue to gather pace.
With the 2027 General Election drawing closer, leaders are expected to intensify grassroots campaigns and coalition-building efforts as they seek to strengthen their support across the region.
