Big Blow to the United Opposition as Top Leader Rejects Deputy Position Ahead of 2027

People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has made it clear that she is aiming for the presidency in the 2027 General Election and is no longer interested in serving as anyone's running mate.

Speaking in a statement that has sparked fresh political debate, Karua said she had already played that role when she teamed up with Raila Odinga during the 2022 General Election. She emphasized that her political journey has now reached a point where she wants to lead from the front.

"I had a good run with Raila, and I was ready to deputise him. I have had enough of that. I want to be the candidate; I don't want to be a running mate," Karua said.

Her remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are holding consultations on how to unite ahead of the 2027 elections.
