Political tensions in the Mt. Kenya region continued to rise on Thursday after Mbeere North MP Mwengi Mutuse alleged that there is a coordinated political strategy to reduce former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's influence in Wamunyoro, Nyeri County.
Speaking at a political gathering, Mutuse claimed that National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah and other leaders are working together to ensure Gachagua no longer enjoys unquestioned support in what has long been considered his political stronghold.
According to the legislator, the move is part of a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He maintained that no area should be regarded as a permanent political fortress and that every leader must be prepared to face competition.
His remarks come at a time when Gachagua has stepped up political engagements across the country, holding meetings with leaders and supporters while positioning himself as one of the key opposition figures ahead of the next presidential election.
Wamunyoro has increasingly become the venue for many of his consultations and strategy meetings.
The comments also coincide with heightened political activity across Kenya. Earlier today, opposition leaders under the Linda Mwananchi movement held a major rally in Kisii, where they renewed calls for a united opposition front to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.
Leaders including Edwin Sifuna, Babu Owino and former Chief Justice David Maraga urged supporters to remain united as preparations for the election gather momentum.
Although Mutuse did not provide specific details of the alleged plan, his remarks are likely to fuel fresh debate over the political future of the Mt. Kenya region.
With campaigns gradually taking shape, competition for influence in key voting blocs is expected to intensify as both government and opposition leaders position themselves for the 2027 race.
