Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has emerged as one of Africa’s most trusted leaders, in recent days Since leaving office in 2022.
After his retirement, Uhuru has been up and down with strengthening democracy, mediating conflicts, and leading election observation missions across the continent.
This week, he arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the country’s general election. Remaining highly visible on international platforms, representing African institutions on matters of elections, peace, and good governance.
Mr. Kenyatta urged African nations to advance democracy through solutions rooted in their own circumstances rather than relying on systems imported from outside the continent.
Mr. Kenyatta’s prominence in election matters grew further in 2024 when he was appointed to lead the African Union observer mission during South Africa’s general election.
In addition, in 2023, he led the African Union observer mission during the presidential election in Nigeria that brought President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to power.
In the same year, he also led the East African Community (EAC) observer mission during elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
These responsibilities have strengthened his standing as one of the leaders most trusted by regional and continental institutions to oversee democratic processes.
Political analysts say his current role has transformed his image from a national leader into a highly influential continental diplomat.
According to these analysts, his ability to work with leaders from different countries, combined with his decade-long experience leading Kenya, has earned him considerable respect within African political circles.
