A deep sense of grief has engulfed residents of Bangale in Tana River County after two young sisters lost their lives after falling into a shallow, uncovered well near their home.
The heartbreaking incident involved a two-year-old and a three-year-old who are reported to have wandered away from their home unnoticed before the tragedy occurred.
According to police reports, the matter was first brought to authorities on Friday by the children’s grandfather, a resident of Bulla Mansole in Bangale Location.
Early findings suggest that the two toddlers left the compound without the knowledge of their carers. At around 3:30 in the afternoon, an alarm was raised after children playing in the neighbourhood were heard screaming.
Family members and neighbours rushed to the scene, only to discover that the two sisters had fallen into a nearby shallow well. Their bodies were later found trapped in thick mud inside the water point.
Residents quickly gathered at the scene and helped in retrieving the bodies from the well. The incident left the community in shock as efforts to save the children proved unsuccessful.
Authorities confirmed that the bodies were later released to the family and laid to rest according to Islamic burial customs.
The tragedy has reignited concern over the safety of open and unprotected wells in rural parts of Kenya, where many water sources remain unfenced and easily accessible to children.
Community members have urged households and local leaders to take stronger preventive measures to avoid similar accidents in the future.
As the family comes to terms with the devastating loss, the incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by unsecured water points, especially for young children who are often unaware of the risks around them.
