Ruto's Camp Under Fresh Scrutiny as Uhuru and Gachagua Make Surprising Alliance Ahead of 2027 Polls

The 45-day political retreat by Democracy for Citizen Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri has sparked renewed efforts to forge a political understanding between him and former president Uhuru Kenyatta as opposition leaders intensify preparations for the 2027 General Election.

Political insiders say the period of reflection has allowed Gachagua to reassess his political strategy following his fallout with President William Ruto and his subsequent efforts to consolidate support across the Mt. Kenya region.

His latest pronouncements suggest a shift from personal ambition toward building a broader opposition coalition focused on a single objective—defeating President Ruto in 2027.

In recent remarks, Gachagua indicated that he is prepared to set aside his own presidential aspirations if doing so would strengthen the opposition's chances of forming the next government.

He said the priority should be identifying the strongest candidate capable of uniting Kenyans and mounting a formidable challenge against the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Among the leaders he has mentioned as possible flag bearers are Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, Orange Democratic Movement Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa.

According to Gachagua, any of these leaders could receive the backing of the Mt. Kenya region if selected through a transparent and consensus-driven process.

The developments have also revived speculation about a possible reconciliation between Gachagua and Uhuru Kenyatta.

The two leaders experienced a strained relationship during the 2022 General Election, when they found themselves on opposing political sides.

However, analysts argue that the evolving political landscape may necessitate cooperation, particularly if the opposition seeks to present a united front against President Ruto.

Observers believe Uhuru remains an influential figure in Mt. Kenya politics despite maintaining a relatively low public profile since leaving office.

A working relationship between the former president and Gachagua could significantly reshape the region's political dynamics and strengthen efforts to consolidate opposition support.

The reported reconciliation efforts come as opposition leaders continue consultations aimed at avoiding a fragmented presidential contest.

Lessons from previous elections have underscored the importance of unity, with coalition leaders increasingly emphasizing consensus over individual ambitions.

Political analysts note that Gachagua's declaration of willingness to support another candidate marks a significant departure from conventional succession politics, where regional kingpins often insist on leading the presidential ticket.

Whether the pledge translates into practical political agreements remains to be seen, as negotiations over leadership, coalition structures, and power-sharing are expected to intensify in the coming months.

As the 2027 race gradually takes shape, attention is likely to remain on the evolving relationship between Gachagua and Uhuru Kenyatta, as well as ongoing talks among opposition leaders seeking to build a united coalition capable of mounting a competitive challenge in the next general election.

While no formal alliance has been announced, the renewed dialogue signals that political realignments are gathering momentum, with Mt. Kenya expected to remain a decisive battleground in determining Kenya's next leadership.
