Ezekiel Kyama, the young Kenyan popularly known as “Mr Speaker Sir” following his dramatic appearance inside Parliament during the June 25, 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests, has reportedly been arrested in Nairobi’s Central Business District and is being held at Central Police Station.
Kyama became one of the most recognizable faces of the Gen Z-led protests after a viral video captured him seated in the Speaker’s chair inside Parliament during the historic breach of the National Assembly. According to reports circulating online, Kyama was among several individuals detained during demonstrations and later taken to Nairobi Central Police Station. Videos shared on social media showed him alongside other detainees appealing for assistance following their arrest.
The development has sparked fresh debate online, with some Kenyans questioning whether individuals associated with the 2024 protests are still being targeted by authorities, while others argue that law enforcement is carrying out its mandate in maintaining public order.
As of Thursday evening, authorities had not publicly disclosed the specific charges Kyama may face. The incident has nevertheless renewed public attention on one of the most memorable figures from the historic Gen Z protests and the broader conversation surrounding civil liberties, accountability, and the legacy of June 25.
With commemorations continuing across the country today, Kyama’s arrest has become one of the most talked-about developments linked to the anniversary events.
