Handshake? Speculation High as Kalonzo Meets MP Mwengi Mutuse in Makueni

A meeting between Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse has attracted public attention after the two leaders were seen sharing a warm moment during a funeral gathering in Makueni County.

The leaders met in Makindu while attending a condolence ceremony for the family of prominent businessman Stephen Ngei Musyoka and his wife, Giannaphina Mumbua Ngei, who died in a tragic road accident on June 20.

Kalonzo, a leading opposition figure, and Mutuse, who is associated with President William Ruto's camp, were seen embracing and holding a brief conversation after the memorial event. Images and videos from the gathering quickly circulated online, prompting speculation about the nature of their relationship despite their differing political affiliations.

Many Kenyans interpreted the friendly exchange as a possible sign of improving ties between the two politicians, with some suggesting it could have implications for political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections. However, neither Kalonzo nor Mutuse has commented on the speculation or indicated any plans to work together politically.

Mutuse later shared a photograph from the event showing the two leaders greeting each other and engaging in discussion, further fuelling public interest. The leaders had attended the ceremony to mourn Stephen Ngei and his wife, who were widely respected in the region.

Stephen Ngei was the founder of Makindu Motors Ltd, a company recognised for its contribution to transport services and economic growth in the area.

During the gathering, condolences were extended to the couple's children, Alex, Rose, and Muuo, their mother Dorothy Mbithe Musyoka, relatives, business associates, and members of the wider community.

The burial of Stephen Ngei Musyoka and Giannaphina Mumbua Ngei is scheduled to take place at their Shauri Moyo home in Makindu on Friday, June 26, beginning at 10 a.m.

Their deaths have left a deep impact on the Makindu community, where many residents continue to remember them for their business success and contribution to local development.
