Ex-LSK Boss, Babu Owino Set To Storm Courts Today For Legal Battle Over Arrested Protesters

The legal battle over Kenyans arrested during Thursday's demonstrations is expected to shift to court today after a fresh update from Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo.

In a statement shared on Friday morning, Faith said she and other advocates had visited Nairobi Central Police Station after receiving information that about 74 people were being held following Thursday's demonstrations.

"We agitated for their arraignment in Court without undue delay," Faith said, adding that the 74 were expected to appear before the Milimani Magistrates Court later on Friday, where a team of advocates had already volunteered to represent them on a pro bono basis.

The latest development comes a day after Embakasi East MP Babu Owino fulfilled a promise he had made before Thursday's demonstrations. Ahead of the protests, Babu announced that anyone arrested would receive free legal representation.

On Thursday evening, after the arrests, the MP arrived at Nairobi Central Police Station with a team of lawyers.

Addressing journalists outside the station, he maintained that those arrested had committed no offence apart from demanding better governance.

"The only offence that they committed is to go to the streets to fight for their own rights," Babu said, adding that his legal team would meet them in court.

He further reminded those in custody that their cases would ultimately be determined by the judiciary, saying, "The power of a police officer stops there. The power now shifts to the judiciary."

Before leaving the station, Babu and his team also delivered bread and milk for those being held inside.

Faith also appealed to advocates around Kibra and Makadara Law Courts to remain available in case more protesters arrested at other police stations were presented before those courts, setting the stage for what is expected to be a busy day in court following Thursday's demonstrations.
