Details of Advanced Anti-Drone Armoured Vehicle Spotted in Wajir During Ruto Visit

An advanced anti-drone armoured vehicle attracted attention in Wajir on Monday as Kenya marked the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations led by President William Ruto. WATCH VIDEO OF THE VEHICLE.

The sophisticated military platform was among the security assets deployed to protect thousands of residents, government officials, diplomats, and invited guests who attended the national celebrations at Wajir Stadium.

Its appearance quickly generated interest among security experts and members of the public who noticed the heavily guarded vehicle stationed around key locations during the event.

Defence observers later identified the system as the OW5-A50, a laser-based counter-drone weapon developed by China North Industries Group Corporation.

The advanced system is designed to detect, track, and neutralize drones as well as other low-flying aerial threats that could pose security risks during major events.

The OW5-A50 represents a new generation of air defence technology that relies on directed-energy weapons instead of traditional missile systems. Using high-powered lasers, the platform is capable of disabling drones by damaging their electronic components and critical systems.

This approach allows operators to respond quickly to potential threats without launching conventional interceptors.

Mounted on a high-mobility 8x8 military truck, the vehicle combines several technologies to enhance its effectiveness.

These include radar systems for detecting incoming aerial objects, electro-optical sensors for identification and tracking, and advanced targeting equipment that enables operators to engage threats with precision.
