UDA Leaders Threaten to Petition Ruto to Remove Omar as UDA SG If He Does Not Resign In 48 Hours; Reason Disclosed

A fresh political storm has erupted inside Kenya’s ruling party after a section of leaders from the Mount Kenya region demanded the immediate resignation of Hassan Omar Hassan as Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance.

The leaders, who are closely allied to William Ruto, issued a dramatic 48-hour ultimatum to Omar, warning that failure to step down voluntarily would trigger formal efforts to kick him out of the powerful party position.

The revolt is being spearheaded by Alice Ng'ang'a and John Njuguna Kawanjiku, who accused Omar of making reckless and divisive remarks targeting the Mount Kenya region during the President’s recent Coast tour.

The MPs said Omar’s apology was not genuine and failed to address the gravity of the statements that sparked outrage among party supporters.

“As leaders, we demand the immediate and unconditional resignation of Hassan Omar as Secretary General of the UDA Party,” the statement read.

The lawmakers further warned that if Omar ignores the demand, they would formally petition President Ruto and invoke internal party disciplinary structures to force him out of office.

“Should he fail to tender his resignation voluntarily within 48 hours, we will formally present a joint petition to our party leader to invoke our party organs to dismiss him from his position,” they added.

The controversy stems from remarks Omar allegedly made during President Ruto’s Coast region visit last week, where he appeared to blame one region for the nationwide matatu strike that recently paralysed transport operations in several parts of the country.

His comments quickly triggered anger online and within sections of the ruling coalition, with critics accusing him of promoting regional divisions at a sensitive political moment.

Although Omar later issued a public apology, he maintained that his comments had been taken out of context by political opponents seeking to damage his reputation.

The escalating standoff now threatens to expose deep cracks within UDA, raising fears of an internal power struggle that could destabilize the party ahead of crucial political realignments.
