Fresh reports have revealed details of several failed attempts by President William Ruto to rebuild his relationship with former President Uhuru Kenyatta after the 2022 General Election.
The two leaders, who once worked closely for nearly a decade under the Jubilee administration, fell out during Uhuru’s second term in office, creating one of the biggest political breakups in Kenya’s recent history.
According to reports, Ruto reached out to Uhuru soon after taking over power in September 2022 in what was seen as an effort to ease political tension and promote national unity.
However, the reconciliation attempts allegedly did not receive a positive response from the retired president.
Their fallout became public after Uhuru joined hands with opposition leader Raila Odinga through the famous 2018 Handshake. At the time, Ruto’s allies accused powerful figures within government of sidelining the then Deputy President from key State decisions.
Even after winning the presidency, sources claim Ruto remained interested in restoring communication with his former boss. Religious leaders and mutual political associates are also said to have attempted to bring the two leaders together, but the efforts reportedly failed.
One of the most talked-about reconciliation efforts allegedly happened when Ruto visited Uhuru’s Ichaweri home carrying 12 goats — a gesture traditionally associated with peace, respect, and reconciliation in many Kenyan communities.
Despite the symbolic move, reports indicate the meeting did not fully heal the political rift between the two leaders.
Since leaving office, Uhuru has occasionally criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration, especially on governance and economic matters.
On the other hand, some leaders allied to Ruto have accused the former president of quietly supporting opposition activities against the government.
Political observers now believe the strained relationship between the two leaders could continue influencing Kenya’s political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
