Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has reaffirmed that opposition leaders are working toward presenting a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, signaling intensified efforts to avoid internal divisions that weakened previous coalitions.WATCH VIDEO...
Speaking during recent media interviews, Sifuna said the opposition understands that fragmentation would hand an advantage to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), and therefore a structured and transparent selection process is being developed to identify a consensus flagbearer.
According to him, the emerging plan involves relying heavily on public opinion and broad consultations rather than backroom political negotiations.
The Nairobi senator also linked the opposition’s strategy to the broader vision of inclusive governance, saying Kenyans are increasingly demanding leadership that prioritizes integrity, accountability, and economic recovery.
He argued that the growing criticism of government policies across different regions reflects a public desire for change, which the opposition intends to consolidate through a unified front.
Political analysts say the push for a single candidate could significantly reshape the 2027 race if opposition figures manage to agree on one platform early enough to build nationwide momentum.
However, questions remain over how competing ambitions within various opposition factions will be managed, especially with several influential leaders expected to seek the ticket.

He emphasized that the preferred candidate will not be chosen based on personal ambition or seniority, but on leadership qualities and public trust.
“We are moving toward a process where Kenyans will have a strong voice in determining who carries the opposition flag,” Sifuna said, adding that unity remains the opposition’s strongest political asset heading into 2027.
He further noted that the opposition is keen on avoiding the mistakes of past elections where competing interests split votes and weakened their bargaining power. Sifuna insisted that selfish political interests will not be tolerated within the coalition-building process.
