“Leadership Vacuum Crisis” — Orengo Claims ODM Broke Party Rules After Raila’s Death, Says He Has Stepped In

Siaya Governor James Orengo has sparked fresh political debate after alleging that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) failed to follow its own internal rules following the death of former party leader Raila Odinga, warning that the misstep could have long-term consequences for the party’s stability. Speaking during a televised interview, Orengo dismissed reports of a personal feud with ODM leadership, particularly Oburu Oginga, insisting that his concerns are rooted in constitutional and party governance principles rather than individual differences.

He argued that ODM’s leadership structure requires a clear succession process when the top seat becomes vacant, stating that one of the party’s deputy leaders should have been appointed as interim leader until formal elections are conducted. According to him, this procedure was not followed.

“I have no beef with Oburu Oginga; it is not personal. What I am saying is that ODM must live according to its principles and must also respect the Constitution,” Orengo said.

The governor further claimed that the absence of a properly designated interim leader has created a leadership vacuum within the party at a critical moment, especially as ODM navigates a changing political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a controversial statement, Orengo went on to declare that he has assumed a temporary leadership role within the party to prevent what he termed institutional paralysis.

“That did not happen. But because we cannot have a leadership vacuum, I am currently the leader of ODM,” he stated.

His remarks have triggered strong reactions within political circles, with analysts warning that his declaration could deepen internal divisions at a time when the party is expected to consolidate and reposition itself following Raila Odinga’s passing.

Some party insiders argue that any leadership changes must follow ODM’s established internal procedures, while others see Orengo’s comments as a signal of emerging power struggles within the opposition stronghold.

Political observers say the unfolding dispute could shape ODM’s future direction and influence how the party competes in the 2027 elections, especially as it seeks to maintain unity while managing succession politics.

As the debate continues, attention is now shifting to whether the party will officially respond to Orengo’s claims or move to clarify its leadership structure in order to avoid further internal uncertainty.
