French President Emmanuel Macron goes for a morning run with Eliud Kipchoge on the streets of Nairobi

French President Emmanuel Macron surprised many Nairobi residents on Monday morning when he traded his formal summit attire for running gear and joined marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge for a jog through the city.

Macron is in Kenya for the high-profile Africa Forward Summit, a two-day meeting bringing together African and European leaders, investors, and policymakers to discuss trade, climate action, technology, and investment.

The French leader was seen wearing a navy blue training shirt with white stripes on the sleeves, black shorts, and blue running shoes.

Kipchoge, widely regarded as one of the greatest marathon runners in history, matched the relaxed mood in similar athletic gear as the two ran side by side while chatting.

Behind them was a group of runners and members of the presidential security team, who kept pace as the pair moved through Nairobi’s streets.

The unusual sight of a sitting French president jogging alongside Kenya’s most celebrated long-distance athlete quickly attracted attention online, with many praising the symbolic moment that blended diplomacy and sports.

Kipchoge is admired around the world for his discipline, endurance, and achievements, including two Olympic marathon gold medals and becoming the first man to run a marathon in under two hours under special conditions.

The morning run offered a lighter moment amid the busy schedule of the summit, which officially began in Nairobi on Monday.

Macron is among the major global leaders attending the event, which is being co-hosted by Kenya and France.

The summit is focused on strengthening partnerships between Africa and Europe through infrastructure development, renewable energy, digital transformation, agriculture, and education.

During the summit, Kenya and France are expected to deepen bilateral cooperation and sign agreements aimed at boosting economic growth and innovation.

For Kenya, hosting the Africa Forward Summit is a significant diplomatic achievement, further cementing Nairobi’s reputation as a regional center for business, diplomacy, and international partnerships.

The event has drawn delegations from across Africa and Europe, including presidents, prime ministers, ministers, and representatives of international organizations, all seeking new ways to unlock Africa’s economic potential and strengthen ties with Europe.
