A courtroom session at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi turned unexpectedly humorous after an American national facing immigration-related charges shifted attention from legal matters to prison food complaints, leaving those present both surprised and amused.
The man, identified as Hodgkinson Enock Jedidah, appeared before a magistrate on allegations of overstaying his visa in Kenya by a short period.
However, instead of focusing solely on the charge, he drew attention when he raised concerns about the food he was being served while in remand custody.
He argued that he had tried reaching his airline and even purchased mobile phones in an attempt to arrange his departure, but still could not manage to exit Kenya in time.
What caught the attention of the courtroom, however, was his emotional complaint about the meals provided to him while detained.
He described being served ugali and cabbage in what he considered inadequate portions and asked the court to intervene to ensure better treatment.
His remarks briefly triggered laughter in the courtroom, temporarily shifting the mood of what was otherwise a routine immigration hearing.
The magistrate, however, maintained order and reminded him that such concerns were not part of the bail application. The court emphasized that the proper stage for presenting his full defence would come later during the pre-trial and hearing process.
The prosecution maintained that Jedidah had no valid immigration status at the time of his arrest and had overstayed his permitted stay in the country.
The court further noted that he did not have a fixed place of residence in Kenya, a factor that led to the denial of bond. He was therefore ordered to remain in custody at Industrial Area Prison pending a pre-trial mention scheduled for June 8.
The case is set to proceed as immigration authorities continue to pursue the charges against him, while his unusual courtroom remarks continue to draw public attention.
