The arrangement targets adult learners above 24 years and repeaters seeking to improve previous grades. Registration is conducted at Sub-County Directors of Education offices, where applicants must present proof of prior KCSE participation if they are repeaters.
Candidates repeating seven or more subjects register under Entry Code 2, while those retaking fewer than seven subjects use Entry Code 3. Full repeaters can retake exams multiple times, provided they meet entry requirements.
Those repeating between one and six subjects can only do so once. They cannot introduce new subjects and will receive a supplementary result slip that does not alter their original mean grade.
Theory and practical examinations are administered at county headquarters in centres designated by County Directors of Education. Project work is undertaken at sub-county institutions identified by SCDEs.
Only one private examination centre is permitted per sub-county for project supervision. All other papers are sat at the county headquarters.
Applicants must present a National ID, passport, or birth certificate. Foreign candidates require valid documentation, while those without IDs must provide proof of application.
Minimum entry qualifications include a KCPE, EACE, KCE certificate, or foreign qualification accompanied by a KNEC equivalence letter. Alternatively, candidates may present a primary certificate and a KCSE Qualifying Test pass slip.
Applicants must show evidence of at least three years since completing primary education. They are also required to download and complete registration forms from the KNEC website before reporting to SCDE offices.
Private candidates must pay KSh 7,200 via e-Citizen during registration. Payment is mandatory and non-transferable.
All registered candidates must report to their SCDE to sign the nominal roll and confirm their details after registration closes.
The move comes as Kenya phases out the 8-4-4 system under the Competency-Based Education transition, marking the final stretch for KCSE cohorts.
