Political commentator Onyango Okello Oyoo has sparked fresh debate after making bold claims about the internal political calculations shaping Kenya’s 2027 succession politics, particularly around Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.
According to Oyoo, Omollo is allegedly maneuvering quietly to influence who President William Ruto might choose as a running mate should he look to the ODM party for a deputy.
Oyoo claims Omollo prefers Siaya Senator and ODM leader Dr. Oburu Odinga for the position rather than Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who has long been viewed as a strong contender from the region.
Oyoo argues that this alleged preference is driven less by party unity and more by personal political survival.
In his analysis, he suggests that Oburu Odinga, due to his age and perceived lack of future presidential ambitions, would pose minimal political threat to Omollo’s influence in Nyanza politics, particularly in Homa Bay, Omollo’s home area.
In contrast, Oyoo describes Governor Wanga as a formidable and rising force whose elevation to the national stage could significantly alter local power structures.
He claims that if Wanga were to become Deputy President, her expanded authority could weaken Omollo’s standing and limit his future political options.
Oyoo further alleges that these concerns have prompted behind-the-scenes efforts to slow or counter Wanga’s growing influence.
He portrays the situation as a high-stakes struggle for relevance, with competing camps positioning themselves ahead of the next general election.
“These moves are about self-preservation,” Oyoo suggests, arguing that political actors are already calculating how to safeguard their interests long before formal campaign alignments are announced.
The claims add another dimension to the already intricate dynamics within ODM and its relationship with the Ruto administration.
With the 2027 elections still some time away, such speculation highlights the early jostling for power and influence that often defines Kenyan politics.
As the political temperature rises, observers are expected to closely track how alliances form, shift, or fracture as key players quietly prepare for the battles ahead.
