Behind Closed Doors: "ODM in Chaos" Inside ODM’s Power Struggle

In the corridors of Kenyan politics, a fresh wave of tension is sweeping through the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as internal party dynamics reach a boiling point.

Sources close to the party reveal what some are calling a “party auction,” a figurative scramble for influence, positions, and candidacies ahead of the next election cycle.

At the heart of the turmoil are competing interests within ODM, with senior leaders and emerging politicians jostling for control over nominations, party nominations lists, and local strongholds.

Analysts suggest that the discord reflects both generational and ideological divides, as younger cadres push for greater inclusion while established leaders strive to maintain their grip.

Inside the party, meetings have reportedly grown tense, with factions negotiating behind closed doors. One insider described the current situation as “an auction where everyone is bidding, not with money, but with loyalty, promises, and influence.”

Sources indicate that this jockeying is affecting the party’s cohesion at both the county and national levels, raising concerns about its readiness for the upcoming elections.

Party officials, however, have sought to downplay the narrative of internal strife.

ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna stated last week that “the party remains united, and all processes will follow our democratic principles.”

Yet, political observers note that the rapid pace of nominations and the behind-the-scenes maneuvering suggest a different reality.

Some analysts argue that this period of internal wrangling could either weaken ODM’s electoral prospects or, if managed carefully, emerge as a strategic reshuffle that strengthens the party’s base.

“These are high-stakes negotiations,” says Dr. Peter Mwangi, a political commentator. “How ODM resolves these conflicts could define its political trajectory for years to come.”

For ordinary supporters, the “auction” metaphor captures the sense of uncertainty and competition within their once tightly knit party.

As the dust settles, all eyes will be on ODM’s leadership to see whether they can transform these wrangles into a platform for renewal—or whether the party will be consumed by internal rivalries.
