Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has urged the Nyanza region to repay what he called a political debt owed to President William Ruto.
He spoke during the launch of rural electrification projects at Kagito in Uriri Constituency. The event drew a large crowd from Migori County.
Wandayi asked residents to back President Ruto in the 2027 general elections. He said the region must unite and give full support to the Head of State.
He noted that the community did not vote for him in 2022 but said the coming election should be different.
The CS reminded the crowd that Ruto once stood firmly behind Raila Odinga. He pointed to the 2007 campaign when Ruto joined rallies and defended Raila across the country. Wandayi said Ruto took risks for ODM and for the Luo community during that period.
He told residents that Ruto even ended up at The Hague because of the political battles of that time. He argued that this sacrifice created a debt that should be honoured. He urged Nyanza voters to repay that gesture at the ballot.
Wandayi is among top ODM figures working inside the broad based government. He has been pressing the party to back President Ruto in 2027. His message in Migori followed similar calls made in other Nyanza counties in recent weeks.
He said the region should not stay outside the main voting block. He stressed that being part of the group supporting the President would help secure future development. He added that political unity with the government would open the door for more projects.
During the event he interacted with residents and listened to their concerns. Many residents welcomed the new electrification projects. They said the power lines will help homes and businesses in the rural areas.
Wandayi assured them that more projects are coming. He said the government is keen on improving energy access in the region. He added that stable power will support schools health centres and local markets.
The CS said he will continue visiting the area to check the progress of the new works. He also promised to keep pushing for more investment in Migori and the wider Nyanza region.
